Important Notice Due to COVID-19: Tax Transcripts are only available online. The IRS has currently stopped processing transcript requests by mail until further notice.

IMPORTANT: For the 2019-20 and 2020-21 Award Years colleges can accept signed IRS Tax Returns if the student or parent is unable to obtain an official IRS Tax Transcript through the IRS website.  The tax returns must either be signed by the tax filer or it can have the tax preparer’s full information.

How do I obtain proof of non-filing while the IRS has stopped processing requests due to COVID-19?
If you are unable to obtain proof of your non-filing status for the 2018 tax year from the IRS or other tax authorities, you may submit a SIGNED statement instead.

  • The statement must certify that you attempted to obtain proof of your non-filing status for the 2018 tax year from the IRS or other tax authorities but were unable to obtain the required documentation.
  • The statement should also indicate the reason you were unable to obtain the required documentation from the IRS. The statement must be SIGNED with a signature.

If you or your parents are required to file a tax return, you must do so in order to be considered for any Federal Student Aid. You may complete your FAFSA using estimations and once you complete your tax return(s), you must make corrections to the application.

The FAFSA must be filed based on your or your parents' marital status on the day you complete the FAFSA.  For example, if you or your parents were single when taxes were filed, but later married, you or your parents will need to file your FAFSA as married and add your or your parent's spouse's income to the FAFSA manually.  If selected for verification you would supply both tax return transcripts.

If you, or your parents, are not required to file taxes, please select the “will not file” option on the FAFSA application. If selected for verification, you will have to provide proof of all income and a "Verification of Nonfiling Letter" from the IRS to the Office of Financial Aid for the tax year in question.  For information on how to obtain "Tax Return Transcripts" or "Verification of Nonfiling Letter" free of charge from the IRS see "How do I get a tax transcript?"

Student and/or parents who have filed an IRS Tax Return in the past Can request the Verification of Non-Filing Letter via telephone at 1-800-908-9946 or online.
Student and/or parents who have never filed an IRS Tax Return

Cannot request the Verification of Non-Filing Letter via telephone or online.

Do not visit an IRS office to request the Verification of Non-Filing Letter.

The Verification of Non-Filing Letter must be made by submitting to the IRS using the IRS Form 4506-T via mail.  The form is available on the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/forms-instructions
